If you could change one aspect of the energy system, what would it be? Here are some of the topics that we’ve discussed on this post this year that would make my shortlist:
Make nuclear power cheaper and deliverable - the government should make a long-term commitment to building more than 20 large reactors over the 10-15 years and 20 SMRs.
Kick start decarbonisation of the home by amending building regulations to ensure that all new homes are carbon free, such as through heat pumps or district heating.
Reform the energy market to separate carbon and zero carbon generation, with an increasing requirement for suppliers to be operating in the zero-carbon market.
International alignment on a realistic carbon price. A European only mechanism will accelerate deindustrialisation in Europe, a problem for society and the environment.
Clean up industry governance, with a massive simplification of structures, a move to principles-based regulation, and a gradual stepping back from day-to-day interference.
Rationally present the real costs of the energy transition, and the costs of inaction, to consumers to allow for informed choices.
Introduce a social tariff that takes everyone out of fuel poverty. It’s unacceptable that people cannot afford to heat their homes this winter.
Progressively equalise gas and electricity prices per unit, so that gas carries a pollution levy and its share of industry costs.
Ensure that renewables are always coupled with storage. CfDs should be awarded if renewables have corresponding storage, ideally 3 days’ worth.
In 2025, I would start with a social tariff as this will change peoples’ lives quickly.
