Much like Steve Balmer’s great ‘developers’ being the answer to the software industry transformation speech (link below), the heroes of the Energy Transition are the teams that build and maintain assets.
Energy Transition is a physical asset challenge. We need to invest vast sums in fixed assets – turbines, panels, networks, pipes, pumps, sensors, and more.
Existing players are seeing their annual investment budgets doubling, and new players with huge funding are entering the market. The need to optimise asset processes has never been higher. The winners will be those that can align their organisations from a clear strategy to flawless execution.
One of my meetings this week was with a Norwegian asset manager, his part of the organisation will be investing 1 billion NOK every year on new energy assets (about $100m). This story is being repeated across the globe leading to $ trillions of investment.
I spent two great days in our Paris office this week bringing together our thinking on asset management from teams across the world, with decades of experience, and hundreds of successful projects delivered. All of this thinking came down to defining asset management as just two things:
1. Build it quicker
2. Operate it quicker and for longer
With the world class leaders being the asset managers who can create value by seamlessly operating across both areas. Having made decisions on the right organisation, right information and right systems. There was no single ‘get right’ – the leaders will be those that can manage every dimension of the challenge.
